2025: A Defining Year for Wales’ Technology Sector

2025 marked another important year for Wales’ technology sector.

Against a backdrop of economic change, skills demand and rapid technological advancement, it was a year in which Welsh tech gained more visibility, strengthened its influence, and demonstrated – both at home and further afield – the depth of innovation being developed across the nation.

Technology Connected was proud to play a role in supporting and showcasing this progress.

Creating Opportunities for Progress

Throughout the year, our focus remained on building meaningful opportunities that enable connection, collaboration, and growth across the tech ecosystem.

Here are just some of our highlights from 2025…

The main focus for us this year was of course Wales Tech Week 2025, which welcomed over 4,000 attendees from across industry, government, academia and investment. The event brought together founders, business leaders, policymakers and investors from across the world to explore ideas, share insight and form partnerships that will help shape the future of the sector. It was a space for practical conversations, knowledge exchange and real outcomes.

Talent4Tech, Wales’ ultimate tech careers event, addressed one of the most pressing challenges facing the industry: access to talent. By connecting the ‘tech curious’ – students, graduates, career changers, ex-military and those returning to work – with employers, the event highlighted the breadth of pathways into technology and reinforced the strength of Wales’ emerging talent pipeline.

The Wales Technology Awards celebrated a significant milestone in 2025, marking its 10th anniversary – and the ultimate grand finale to Wales Tech Week 2025. Over the past decade, the awards have recognised the innovators, entrepreneurs and organisations building world-class technology in Wales. This year’s celebration included some very special Awards, and reflected both how far the sector has come and the ambition that continues to drive it forward.

Q1 saw three notable moments: the VIP launch event for Wales Tech Week, bringing together leaders from across the Welsh tech community, the launch of the Wales Technology Awards at the Senedd, and in collaboration with Welsh Government, we welcomed an international audience of investors, diplomats, trade representatives, officers, and other business stakeholders to Foresight Group in London, to discover the opportunities in Wales ahead of Wales Tech Week.

Sharing Wales’ Technology Story

In 2025, we worked to expand the reach of Wales’ technological achievements.

This included the production of two cluster case study videos highlighting Wales’ key tech strengths in compound semiconductors and cyber security.

We also partnered with Business News Wales on a Wales Tech Week podcast series, digging into how technology is transforming industries across Wales, the UK and the world.

These initiatives helped shine a light on the people, ideas and businesses driving progress in Wales.

Strengthening Connections Across the Ecosystem

Technology Connected continued to engage wherever collaboration could add value.

To name a few, we supported GradCon Cymru, championing early-career talent, participated in the Department for Business and Trade Made in the UK, Sold to the World Roadshow to promote Welsh innovation internationally, exhibited at Welsh Automotive Forum’s Autolink 2025, and attended ‘A Fab Future: Skills & Growth in Welsh Semiconductors’ at the Senedd.

Behind the scenes, we convened industry and public sector leaders through a roundtable with Transport for Wales, meetings with our Technology Leadership Council, and discussions with The Rt Hon Jo Stevens MP, Secretary of State for Wales, helping facilitate informed dialogue around the future of the sector.

A Strong Year for the Sector

Alongside this activity, Wales’ wider tech ecosystem delivered tangible progress, with some highlights including:

  • The recent announcement of AI Growth Zones in North and South Wales signalling increased ambition and government backing for artificial intelligence innovation.
  • Vishay’s £250m investment in Newport’s semiconductor facility (UK’s largest), creating 500+ skilled jobs.
  • £10m UK Government funding for South Wales’ semiconductor industry.
  • Development Bank of Wales surpassed £90m invested in tech ventures, unlocking £195m in co-investment.
  • CSconnected, the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster, celebrated 10 years.

Across the industry, Welsh companies secured investment, scaled operations, won contracts and continued to compete successfully on a global stage.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on 2025, it is clear that Wales’ technology sector is well-positioned for continued growth and influence.

We look forward to seeing what the Welsh tech ecosystem does next – how it evolves, how it collaborates, and how it continues to build technology that delivers real impact for people, businesses and communities.

Technology Connected remains committed to supporting and championing this journey.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2026!
